From West Point to Fort Sumter traces the development of eight
prominent Civil War generals from their days at the United States
Military Academy at West Point to their initial involvement in the Civil
War.
-
From the Union side, I have selected Ulysses S. Grant, William T.
Sherman, George B. McClellan, and Philip Sheridan.
-
The Confederate generals that are profiled are Robert E. Lee, Thomas
"Stonewall" Jackson, James Longstreet, and J.E.B. Stuart.

Classes

Class 1 - West Point - Plebes arrive at West Point to begin their
engineering and military training.

Class 2 - Early Military Career - The commissioned officers begin
their military career.

Class 3 - The Mexican American War - The Mexican American War
provides an opportunity to apply their military training to combat
and to distinguish themselves on the battlefield.

Class 4 - Between Wars - The peacetime army provides few
opportunities for advancement. Sheridan and Stuart begin their
careers. Lee returns to West Point as Superintendent.

Class 5 - The Civil War Begins - As the war begins, many officers
are out of the military pursuing civilian careers. The peacetime
army provides few opportunities for advancement. Sheridan and Stuart
begin their careers. Lee is offered command of Union Army
