§At this site, untested
Confederate gunners defeated Federal ironclad and timberclad
gunboats under command of Flag
Officer Andrew Foote.
§Early on the afternoon of
February 14th Foote's
Union gunboat fleet, consisting of the ironclads St. Louis,
Pittsburgh, Louisville and Corondolet, and
the timberclads Conestoga and Tyler, arrived from Fort
Henry via the Tennessee and Ohio Rivers.
§Using the same tactics
he successfully employed at Fort Henry, Footebrought the gunboats very close to the Confederate
artillery hoping to shell the batteries into submission.
